Rhode Island Government Jobs Honored

Those with Rhode Island government jobs in the state’s health department have received special recognition.
The Wellness Council of America recently named the Rhode Island Department of Health as a Gold Well Workplace and one of America’s Healthiest Companies.
One of the factors that earned the DOH its reward was the department’s self-administered health risk appraisal, which is meant to help staff identify their risks, including on-site aerobics, body sculpting, yoga classes, healthy cooking demonstrations and a newsletter posted on its Intranet system.
The department also hosts a seasonal farmer’s market, smoking cessation programs and resources, a flu clinic, stress management seminars and health screenings.
The evidence is clear that healthier employees are more productive employees, Director of Health David R. Gifford, MD, MPH, said in a press release. We hope to set an example for Rhode Island workplaces by promoting no-cost and affordable opportunities for employees to quit smoking, to eat healthy foods or to get daily exercise.
The Wellness Council of America is a national organization that recognizes workplaces for creative programs and policies that address the wellness needs of employees in physical activity, healthy eating and weight management, stress management, tobacco use and medical self-care.
